RESOLUTION #73-22.
OPPOSING REGISTRATION OF VOTERS ON
ELECTION DAY
WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Minnesota has
instituted a 20 .day period before election during which
registration for th. at election cannot take place, and
~/HEREAS, that time peri'od has worked to the advantage
of local government and citi, zens in maintaining a fair
and reasonable system of voters registration, and
WHEREAS, permitting the registration of voters on
election day would do away with pre-election registration,
and
WHEREAS, lack of ti'me to check accuracy of registration
~ould make possible the practi'ce of double voting since
cha]lenges would become meaningless, and
WHEREAS, such revision would work to the disadvantage of
previously reg(stered citizens by increasing the time they
~ou]d have to spend at the polls, and
~/HEREAS, polling places would have to be enlarged and
additiona] staff h(red, thereby increasing the cost of
elections, and
WHEREAS, such increasing cost would force many
municipalities to exceed levy limits imposed upon them
by law,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
That the City of Columbia Heights does oppose changes in
the voters registration law contained in H.F. #605 and
S.F. #648 and urges the Legislature to reject the
proposals ~3ontained in said bills.
That the City Clerk i~ hereby directed to send
certified copies of th~s re~olution to the legislators
representing the C~ty of Columbia Heights, Minnesota
Clerks and Finance Officers Association, League of
Minnesota Municipalities, and the Anoka County Auditor.
