COLUMBIA HEIGHTS CITY COUNCIL
1988 BUDGET PUBLIC HEARING
SEPTEMBER 29, 1987
The Hearing was called to order by Mayor Nawrocki at 7:30 p.m..
1. Roll Call
Paulson, Carlson, Peterson, Nawrocki - present
Petkoff - absent
2. Purpose of Hearing
The purpose of the hearing is to give all interested citizens an opportunity to
see how City revenues are proposed to be used to provide the services expected
of our City government.
The Council and the City Manager reviewed the budget as proposed by the City
Manager. The Mayor noted that the Council had met with all departments to review
their portion of the budget.
3. Questions and Answers
A resident compared the City of Columbia Heights' budget with that of the City
of Fridley as stated in one of the local newspapers. She inquired why Fridley's
budget was less than that of Columbia Heights when our community is smaller in
size as well as population. She was advised that the Fridley budget as printed
in the paper did not include alt of the items included in the Columbia Heights'
budget. The Fridley budget addressed only the General Fund.
Discussion continued with residents regarding the budget for the Recreation Depart-
ment, weed control, Police Department amd the Business Fair.
One resident inquired if the tax increase will be as large as it was for 1987.
He was advised that the increase in 1987 was mainly due to the increase in the
school district's portion of the taxes. Mayor Nawrocki said the proposed increase
by the City Manager is for 2½ mills. He felt it was doubtful if this amount would
be approved by the City Council and it probably would be reduced.
The property tax levy must be certified by October lOth. The final certification
is scheduled for a meeting on October 8th.
